SAM SHANKMAN PROUTY
Sam has been practicing the GYROTONIC® Expansion System since the 1980s when she lived in Italy for 9 years as a dance instructor. She fell in love with the method in Florence and after moving back to the U.S., was certified in 2001. She has since trained and been certified in the Gyrokinesis Method, Gyrotonic Leg Extension Unit and Jumping Stretching Board.
Santa Fe, NM was Sam’s home from 1992 to 2005. She first received her Pilates training with Ray Kurshals and later was certified in 1998 by Michele Larsson, Core Dynamics Pilates where she was exposed to the Eve Gentry work. Sam continued to work with Michele until moving to Tucson in 2005. In 2006, she became a certified Pilates teacher with the Pilates Method Alliance.
After moving to Tucson, Sam worked at Canyon Ranch and the Jewish Community Center, teaching Pilates and the Gyrotonic Method and in 2006, opened up her own fully equipped studio.
Born an athlete, Anne grew up in Minnesota where playing outside was a way of life. She won the 500 Meter National title in speed skating and also played soccer, basketball, ran track, skied and snowboarded. Varsity tennis led Anne to play Divison 1 at the University of Denver in Colorado.
In her senior year, Anne discovered The Pilates Body by Brooke Siler and in 2000, started training at The Pilates Center in Boulder, CO, with Amy Taylor Alpers and Rachel Taylor Segel. These two sisters trained under Romana Kryzanowska (Joseph Pilates’ protege and inheritor of his studio in NYC), and their studio is world renowned for its classical Pilates training and staying true to the original Pilates method. Anne completed a year long, rigorous 985 hours of instruction and internship in 200l and in 2010, also completed The Pilates Center Masters Program.
Anne started to race competitively in 2002, as an elite road cyclist. Today she continues to compete with the best road racers in the U.S.and has won several national cycling titles on the track and road. It is her commitment to Pilates and self care that keeps her balanced and successful as an aging athlete/cyclist.
